Saturday May 13, 2007 While responding to a call,
Arlington TX Quint 7 was involved in a rollover accident.
ALL PERSONNEL WERE WEARING THEIR SEATBELTS and there
were no injuries. This is a fine example of what this
site is all about. The crew of Quint 7 can go home
to their families. This is one less funeral that our
brothers will be attending this year
.
The day before this event four new tires
were installed on the Engine's rear wheels. Station
personnel reported that the truck seemed to 'sway'
after the new tires were installed. The next day two
firefighters took the truck to Fleet Services to have
the problem investigated. Tire pressures were checked
and a lose valve stem was tightened. When returning
to the Station the wheels on the right side of the
truck went off the pavement and into the ditch. In
pulling back onto the pavement, the truck rolled.
As you can see from the photographs, the truck was
demolished and the officer side roof collapsed. Fortunately,
***both were wearing their seatbelts*** and remained
inside the cab. One firefighter was able to climb
out of the wreckage and assisted the second one out.
They were severely banged up and have injuries that
will require recuperation, but they were both released
from the hospital early the day after the accident.
Both firefighters were wearing their seatbelts. This
prevented them from being ejected or more severely
tossed around in the cab.
SEAT BELTS save lives!

I would like to take this opportunity to pass along
a recent success story involving eight college students.
This past semester eight student attending the University
of Montana -Helena, College of Technology, enrolled
in a driver operators course as part of their endeavor
to obtain their Associates Degree in Fire Science.
From March 27 till May 14, 2007 these students attended
60 hours of drivers safety training that included
classroom training as well as, interstate, secondary
and inner city driving. I am honored and proud to
inform you at the conclusion of the last class each
student made a commitment and signed the seat belt
pledge.
One note of interest, one of the students went back
to his volunteer department (Montana City VFD)and
obtained 24 additional individuals signatures pledging
to wear their seat belts. Kudos to Jermey Kallas for
being pro active in getting his department to get
on board.
The class has made a challenge to other students and
department members that read this article to make
a similar commitment in wearing their seat belts and
to sign the pledge. Together we can all play a part
in reducing emergency responders death and injuries
by just buckling up.

I was driving this vehicle with my seatbelt
on. I agree with the seatbelt initiative. This accident
occurred in the downtown business district of our
city on a street with a 25 mph speed limit. The driver
of the other vehicle went through a stop sign, running
from a seperate accident he was involved in. They
estimate he hit me at 40-45mph. I was going from our
headquarters to Fire Station 1, only 3 blocks away.
I only made it 2 blocks. Take the pledge and buckle
up.
Thanks
